Nissan is redefining the future of driver assistance systems with its next-gen ProPILOT technology, with plans to introduce this highly advanced system on certain vehicles in Japan in fiscal year 2027.
This updated ProPILOT utilizes state-of-the-art artificial intelligence and demonstrated its performance in real-world scenarios when Ariya prototypes drove in a busy and complex urban area in Tokyo.
With this advancement, Nissan is looking to increase confidence and overall comfort for their drivers especially in busy metropolitan areas.

The new Nissan ProPILOT stands out from previous systems by integrating smart software with advanced hardware.
Increase Safety
The system utilizes next-generation LiDAR, eleven cameras and five radar sensors that positively detect objects even in challenging driving conditions, ultimately improving safety.
Response Similar to Human Drivers
In partnership with UK based AI driver start-up Wayve, The AI driver software not only will detect and respond object detection alone but understands how complete driving scenarios transpire allowing the AI to respond similarly to how an experienced human driver would in faster dynamic changes in traffic.
Fast Real-time Responsiveness
The combination of high-speed processing from Nissan's AI with singular focus, keeps drivers and their passengers safe.
Nissan’s collaboration with the UK AI driver start-up Wayve is being used for Nissan's AI driver software. The AI driver software is a significant improvement over previous AI systems in that it interprets and understands how the complete driving scenario develops and utilizes that for more predictable and adaptable responses.

This sensor, located on the vehicle roof, is an integral part of Nissan’s “Ground Truth Perception” and can detect objects at a substantial distance to improve safety at high speeds or while driving at night.

Nissan’s ProPILOT system has gradually evolved over several years in several steps from basic highway driver assistance, to multi-lane support, to full urban presence of the vehicle.
Single-Lane Support
The original ProPILOT offered drivers stability and safety in their lane on highways without actively engaging in steering.
Multi-Lane Enhancements
ProPILOT’s ProPILOT 2.0, allows drivers not only to enjoy lane changes, but more advanced routine driving while on highways.
Urban Adaptations
Finally, the newest Desirably Intelligent Driving System has been demonstrated to be effective in dynamically unpredictable city traffic, as previously mentioned about the advancements that were demonstrated in Japan.
Recent demonstrations in Japan showed advanced improvements by the actors of the ProPILOT systems navigating through and facilitating complex intersections with confident presence and effectively handling difficult situations.
As Eiichi Akashi, Nissan’s Chief Technology Officer said the new generation of ProPILOT system will “adapt to more complex traffic conditions and can provide greater confidence and peace of mind.
